The Grumello subzone has an area planted with vines of 78 hectares and lies on the ethic slope northeast of Sondrio. The name comes from Grumello Castle, a 13th-century fortress overlooking the valley. Built in 1326 by Corrado de Piro, it was destroyed by the Grisons when they invaded the region. Grumello generally presents easier drinking even with shorter aging than the other subzones, which does not preclude good aging potential, however. Grumello shows a ruby red of medium intensity tending toward garnet. The aroma is subtle and intense, with nuances reminiscent of almond. On the palate the wine is dry and velvety, rich in fragrance, slightly tannic, savory and harmonious
