"My grandfather was Giovanni Segantini."
It all began with this short, essential sentence, when in September 2012 we received an email from a Lady unknown to us, but with a famous name, Gioconda Leykauf-Segantini, who wrote to us, "My grandfather loved Valtellina wines and drank them at the table. I would love it if there was a wine from Valtellina with a beautiful painting of Segantini on the label.
As chance would have it, this wine already existed. A year earlier, a decision had been made to produce a new wine by aging in large barrels, as is the Valtellina tradition, instead of barrique, a part of the 2010 vintage obtained by drying in the vineyard. Ms. Gioconda accepted with great enthusiasm our proposal to name this wine "Giovanni Segantini." The painting chosen for the label, "Noon on the Alps" from 1891, shows affinities with the wine of Valtellina because of its peasant character. The wine is a pure Nebbiolo from the steep, sun-kissed terraces of La Gatta Estate. Made from grapes dried in the vineyard and patiently aged for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels.
